Week Four, Day 1
A New Kind of Warfare (I)

  • In between, World War I was the most destructive, among all wars that had happened. It shook the 20th century.
  • By 1900s, only one mosque was left, although they had built tons of mosques before.
  • The empire was ruled by Franz Joseph back then. Franz Joseph was Franz Ferdinand's uncle.
  • For countries like Serbia, Austria was the prison of countries.
  • In 1912, there was a riot happening. Two years later, in 1914, local departments were suspended.
  • Serbia wanted to break up with their empire.
  • Serbia was Russia's greatest ally, and Austria was Russia's greatest enemy
  • There were riots and revolution going on, as if they were never-ending.
  • Austria and Hungary were two kingdoms. The Hapsburg was the one who had the power to control the kingdoms for a really long time. Hapsburg was one of the important dynasties of Central Europe.
  • During his time as a king and emperor, Franz Joseph held two spots.
  • Years ago, it was found out that the Turks and Moslems were trying to approach Europe. This was the spark of the crusades. Crusade was a medieval military expedition made by the Europeans to recover the Holy Land from the Moslems.
  • The Austrian army and the other European armies were able to stop them from coming.
Notes from Allegra's presentation
  • The first World War was the most destructive war that caused conflict to the world.
  • On June 1914, Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by Serbia. It was one of the main causes that caused the World War I. This eventually led to a lot of conflicts.
  • This led to four allies: Austria-Hungary and German to join more allies, which led to more destruction.
  • It eventually got even worse, and that was the reason why they handed the responsibility to Adolf Hitler, which made matters even worse because he was a really ruthless leader who knew no mercy.
  • One of the main causes of World War I was the relationship between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, which was no good. That led to the assassination of the Austrian prince, Franz Ferdinand.
  • In 1914, Austria-Hungary got into a fight with Serbia. Austria wanted to own a region.
  • Le Figaro was a newspaper in the old century.
  • The Black Hand was a group of people who had tuberculosis, and they were on a suicide mission. They were about to kill the government and then, themselves.
