Week Two, Day 2
The Stage is Set for War (pages 112-113)

  • The Domino Effect is used in those Domino games. Once a block falls, it will affect the others, making them fall as well.
  • During that time, there was something called The Domino Effect. That happened in World War I. In that time, there were a lot of alliances. You could not stand all by yourself. You must have friends, aka alliances.
  • Frank Oppression War
  • The whole time, Germany was nervous because France could attack them any time.
  • Germany was small, while France was big. France fought with England and won tons of times.
  • We had a few groups of alliances. They are the Triple Entente, Triple Alliance, and The Balkans. The Triple Entente consisted of Russia, France and Britain. The Triple Alliance consisted of Italy, Austria-Hungary and Germany.
  • Cold War is a state of political hostility between countries characterized by threats, propaganda, and other measures short of open warfare.
  • The Cold War existed between the Soviet bloc countries and the US-led Western powers, from 1945 to 1990.
  • The spark--which caused the World War--happened on June 28th, 1914.
  • Britain was worried that Germany was going to take their land because Germany was expanding.
  • Britain said that they could not build big enough. They build just a big one, instead of few small ones.
  • Causal Relationships is one thing that caused another thing, that caused one more thing, and it goes on.
  • Franz Ferdinand was a prince who fell in love with Sophie, an ordinary woman.
  • He was not a king, he was only a prince.
  • They could not be together because Sophie did not came from a family of royalty. The only way that they could be lovers was when Franz Ferdinand disguised.
  • They tried their best to stabilize their relationship, although the others wanted to destroy it.
  • When Franz Ferdinand and Sophie were walking together, they were shot. Sophie went in front of Franz Ferdinand in order to save him, but it was too late, causing both of them to die at the same spot and time. In the end, they were buried together.
  • On July 28th, Austria blamed assassination on Serbian government. They were angry because their prince, Franz Ferdinand, was killed.
  • Russia started to prepare its army, in order to defend Serbia from the attacks.
  • Germany heard about Russia's preparation, causing them to prepare themselves.
  • Britain and Belgium declared war on Germany.
Note from Trisha's presentation
  • There was Cold War between US and Russia in 1945.
  • In the early 1990s, when the Soviet Union collapsed, the Cold War ended.
  • Austria blamed assassination on Serbian country, and attacked it.
  • Russia promised the protection of Serbia since they were allies.
  • Germany declared war on Russia, in order to defend Austria.
  • Britain mobilized its fleet of warships.
  • Since Germany heard about Russia's preparations, they declared war on France. This was maybe because Germany was worried about the French attacks.
