Week Four, Day 1
A New Kind of Warfare (I)

  • In between, World War I was the most destructive, among all wars that had happened. It shook the 20th century.
  • By 1900s, only one mosque was left, although they had built tons of mosques before.
  • The empire was ruled by Franz Joseph back then. Franz Joseph was Franz Ferdinand's uncle.
  • For countries like Serbia, Austria was the prison of countries.
  • In 1912, there was a riot happening. Two years later, in 1914, local departments were suspended.
  • Serbia wanted to break up with their empire.
  • Serbia was Russia's greatest ally, and Austria was Russia's greatest enemy
  • There were riots and revolution going on, as if they were never-ending.
  • Austria and Hungary were two kingdoms. The Hapsburg was the one who had the power to control the kingdoms for a really long time. Hapsburg was one of the important dynasties of Central Europe.
  • During his time as a king and emperor, Franz Joseph held two spots.
  • Years ago, it was found out that the Turks and Moslems were trying to approach Europe. This was the spark of the crusades. Crusade was a medieval military expedition made by the Europeans to recover the Holy Land from the Moslems.
  • The Austrian army and the other European armies were able to stop them from coming.
Notes from Allegra's presentation
  • The first World War was the most destructive war that caused conflict to the world.
  • On June 1914, Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by Serbia. It was one of the main causes that caused the World War I. This eventually led to a lot of conflicts.
  • This led to four allies: Austria-Hungary and German to join more allies, which led to more destruction.
  • It eventually got even worse, and that was the reason why they handed the responsibility to Adolf Hitler, which made matters even worse because he was a really ruthless leader who knew no mercy.
  • One of the main causes of World War I was the relationship between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, which was no good. That led to the assassination of the Austrian prince, Franz Ferdinand.
  • In 1914, Austria-Hungary got into a fight with Serbia. Austria wanted to own a region.
  • Le Figaro was a newspaper in the old century.
  • The Black Hand was a group of people who had tuberculosis, and they were on a suicide mission. They were about to kill the government and then, themselves.

Week Three, Day 2
Causes of World War I: "The Domino Effect"

  • Two World Wars killed all the Europeans. They left all the European subjects.
  • Before 1914, Europe was the center of the world.
  • In the years before the World War I, they could not imagine and picture what it would be like.
  • They cheered the war in all the great cities, such as London and Berlin.
  • Those who did not die suffered for the rest of their years with limbs, or rot.
  • Everyone agreed that there were no wars like this one, and that nobody could stand that.
  • Each sacrificed at least 16% of the male population.
  • After the war, they were feeling quite excited and relieved. Nobody recognized any weapons.
Notes from Vanessa's presentation
  • The Domino Effect is like the falling down of other blocks when you push one of them down.
  • The Domino Effect also has the same meaning with Causal Relationships.
  • The Kaiser, Wilhelm II, had once said: "Our future lies upon the ocean." What he meant was that the ocean was essential to build a bright future. That was why German started to build its navy.
  • After knowing that German built a navy, British felt challenged and still wanted to be recognized as the place that held the biggest navy.
  • As the competition between these two heated up, British built Dreadnought. So as we can see, this all happened because of a quote from the Kaiser, about the ocean. Without him quoting that, there was a big possibility of this not happening in history.
  • Franz Ferdinand of Austria was a prince, who fell in love with a woman named Sophie. They were not allowed to be in a relationship because Sophie was not rich.
  • It all started on June 28th, 1914. When both Ferdinand and Sophie were walking in Serbia, a Serbian shot them, causing them to die in the end. The 1st World War happened, all due to the assassination of two innocent people: Ferdinand and Sophie.

Week 3 Day 2:
Lecture 1:
·      2 world wars 2 great Europeans killed the world.
·      Before 1914 Europe had been the center of the world.
·      Before the First World War, no one could imagine could be like.
·      At 1991, Winston Churchill was elected to the House of Commons.
·      Germany and Austria felt the balance.
·      Those who weren’t killed suffered for a long time.
·      After the corpses had been buried anyone can visit them.
·      America kept the supplies that France and Britain used for war.
·      Europe was unsettled.
·      4 empires had crumbled. The Russian, Austrian, Britain, German.
·      They thought the first war was a game.
Lecture 2:
·      The domino effect is the falling down of other blocks when you push one of them.
·      German built its navy quickly.
·      British felt challenged and still wanted to have the biggest navy.
·      All countries had allies: Triple Entente and Triple Alliance.
·      Franz Ferdinand of Austria was a prince who fell in love with Sophie. Their relationship was never admitted, though.
·      When both Franz Ferdinand and Sophie were walking, they were shot on 28th June 1914.
·      This all led to World War 1.
·      Serbia and Russia wanted to attack Germany.
Lecture 3:
·      The First World War was the most terrible war the world had ever known.
·      Soldiers faced the enemy acrossed a few hundred metres of churned up ground known as no man’s land.
·      Each side’s trenches were so heavily defended that it was impossible to attack them successfully.
·      In 1917 the war was still in a state of stalemate.

·      The germans now launched a final enormous attack on France.

Week Two, Day 2
The Stage is Set for War (pages 112-113)

  • The Domino Effect is used in those Domino games. Once a block falls, it will affect the others, making them fall as well.
  • During that time, there was something called The Domino Effect. That happened in World War I. In that time, there were a lot of alliances. You could not stand all by yourself. You must have friends, aka alliances.
  • Frank Oppression War
  • The whole time, Germany was nervous because France could attack them any time.
  • Germany was small, while France was big. France fought with England and won tons of times.
  • We had a few groups of alliances. They are the Triple Entente, Triple Alliance, and The Balkans. The Triple Entente consisted of Russia, France and Britain. The Triple Alliance consisted of Italy, Austria-Hungary and Germany.
  • Cold War is a state of political hostility between countries characterized by threats, propaganda, and other measures short of open warfare.
  • The Cold War existed between the Soviet bloc countries and the US-led Western powers, from 1945 to 1990.
  • The spark--which caused the World War--happened on June 28th, 1914.
  • Britain was worried that Germany was going to take their land because Germany was expanding.
  • Britain said that they could not build big enough. They build just a big one, instead of few small ones.
  • Causal Relationships is one thing that caused another thing, that caused one more thing, and it goes on.
  • Franz Ferdinand was a prince who fell in love with Sophie, an ordinary woman.
  • He was not a king, he was only a prince.
  • They could not be together because Sophie did not came from a family of royalty. The only way that they could be lovers was when Franz Ferdinand disguised.
  • They tried their best to stabilize their relationship, although the others wanted to destroy it.
  • When Franz Ferdinand and Sophie were walking together, they were shot. Sophie went in front of Franz Ferdinand in order to save him, but it was too late, causing both of them to die at the same spot and time. In the end, they were buried together.
  • On July 28th, Austria blamed assassination on Serbian government. They were angry because their prince, Franz Ferdinand, was killed.
  • Russia started to prepare its army, in order to defend Serbia from the attacks.
  • Germany heard about Russia's preparation, causing them to prepare themselves.
  • Britain and Belgium declared war on Germany.
Note from Trisha's presentation
  • There was Cold War between US and Russia in 1945.
  • In the early 1990s, when the Soviet Union collapsed, the Cold War ended.
  • Austria blamed assassination on Serbian country, and attacked it.
  • Russia promised the protection of Serbia since they were allies.
  • Germany declared war on Russia, in order to defend Austria.
  • Britain mobilized its fleet of warships.
  • Since Germany heard about Russia's preparations, they declared war on France. This was maybe because Germany was worried about the French attacks.
